There is evidence to suggest that there had been tidal mills at Three Mills long before the industrial revolution, with a listing of eight or nine mills at the time of the Domesday Book of 1086. Indeed, there were several different economic activities taking place at Three Mills before the industrial revolution, such as agriculture, hog raising, and gunpowder manufacturing. The production of gin on an industrial scale would come to Three Mills in 1872.
