The largest of these refineries began production in the 1860s to 1880s and were located in Silvertown. The Clyde Wharf Sugar refinery was the oldest and was forced to close down in 1886, the two other major refineries still operate today: the Thames Refinery and the Plaistow Wharf Sugar Refinery. These refineries operate by taking extracts from sugar beet or sugar cane and refining it into pure sugar for consumption in the food industry.
