Began as outfitters and clothiers of Colonial and Army services, eventually embracing India Rubber and Gutta Purcha for the purpose of manufacturing waterproof clothing. With this in mind, a factory was established in 1852 in an area of London that would come to be known as Silvertown, reflecting the impact this India rubber and Gutta Purcha factory would have to come on the local area. In 1864 S.W. Silver's sons partnered with John Hancock formerly of the West Ham Gutta Purcha Co. and formed the India Rubber, Gutta Percha and Telegraph Works Co. which took over operations of the Silvertown Works site.
