Langthorne Chemical Works was located in Stratford, across from the Abbey Mills Pumping Station. In 1872 it was owned by W.S. Squire and Co (The Chemical Manufacturers Directory of England 5th Edition 1872, 18).

In 1878 Langthorne Chemical Works received an honourable mention at the Paris Exhibition for their “refined saltpetre of great purity, in crystals and granulated. Their specimens of nitric, sulphuric, and hydrochloric acids are good, and those of acetic acid are very varied in strength and quality. They also have a fine show of nitrates and chlorates of barium, strontium, and sodium” (The Lancet 1878 V2, 459).

In 1893, Langthorne Chemical Works was run by Richard England (under R. England and Co.) who renamed the works as England’s Chemical Manufacturing Company (Limited) in 1899. The company then went into voluntary liquidation a year later.

Products included sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sodium sulfate (salt cake/Glaubers salt), potassium sulphate (sulphate potash), potassium nitrate (saltpetre), strontium nitrate (nitrate strontia), and barium nitrate (nitrate baryta) (The Chemical Manufacturers Directory of England 5th Edition 1872, 18).

Langthorne Chemical Works used a variety of minerals to create their chemical products. Potash came from Canada, the United States of America, Germany, and British India. Salt was shipped in from Portugal and Germany. Alum was from the East Indies and China.

In 1907, Langthorne Works was run by R. Gay & Co. and manufactured paint (Times April 15 1907).
