The Cumberland Oil Mills were set up on the south tip of the Isle of Dogs in 1857 by Nicholay, Graham & Armstrong who already owned several mills in West Drayton, Middlesex. The main building on site consisted of a three storey construct with a jetty on top, measuring about 50 feet by 40 feet. Seed-crushing ceased in 1949 in favour of linseed-oil refining. This continued until 1964 when the mills closed and a steel-fabrication company occupied the site.
