Gas produced from refining coal. This process resulted in massive gas works throughout London. After being refined, the gas was stored in large gas holders (sometimes called Gasometers). These were essentially very large, flexible bladders held in place by a steel framework. There are a few which still stand in London today, and are quite distinctive. After being stored in the gas holders, the coal gas was pumped around the city to be used in street lamps, ovens, and heaters; much the same way natural gas is used today. Later used to power early gas engines.
