Description
Created in 1807, the factory was owned by Howard and Sons for the duration of its existence. It was demolished in 1931, although production had gradually ceased in 1914 as a new factory in Ilford was brought into operation. While the new factory in Ilford would focus on industrial solvents and other chemicals, the City Mills and Chemical Works at Stratford was primarily engaged in the production of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. The most profitable products produced at Stratford were drugs such as cocaine and quinine, but the site also produced ether, borax, and citric acid, among others[1].
