Description
A wide ranging industry that transformed animal hides and skins into clothing, horse tack and industrial machine belts. Tanning in London was centered around on parish, Bermondsey. It was here that the largest tanneries, as well as the London Leather Market, could be found. Leather making was not a new industry, and had been practiced in London for centuries. What did change, however, was a switch in tanning agents. As local supplies of oak bark - traditional tanning agent - ran low, tanners started to employ exotic tanning agents obtained from plants in South America, Africa, and Asia.
